Place of origin

Probably rugs were already known very early on in China. The invasion of the Mongols around the year 1279, who not only carried Central Asian rugs with them, but also used them as tents and saddlery, boosted the local production in China, which probably already existed at that time. An exhibition in Saint Louis in the USA in 1903 aroused interest in Chinese rugs in the western world. Soon afterwards, rugs were produced in China solely for export to Europe and North America. This antique Chinese is a collector's item. It is about 110 years old and, therefore, a really special piece. Antique rugs like this Chinese are still very popular and are sold at top prices by renowned auction houses.

Patterns

The embellished edging (border) forms a glorious contrast to the center and creates a transition at the edge of the rug.

In the middle of the central field of this Chinese is the symmetrical center, also called medallion. The design of the field is arranged in such a way that it gives the impression that the medallion is floating on the field.

The color scheme of this China rug is artistic, despite its limitation to a few shades. The refined arrangement of decorative elements is particularly striking in the overall design. The proportions are spacious and appear modern due to the spaced-out arrangement. Typical motifs are dragons, vases, peonies on abstract leaves and tendrils. The motifs are often found in central or corner medallions. At the edges there are often geometrical representations, especially swastikas, which are interwoven. The motifs are similar to those on Chinese porcelain, made during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Minimal technical variations in the production of classical Chinese rugs is a sign of strict tradition, which follows established rules. Despite the rather coarse execution, the pattern is executed with exceptional precision.

The background of this Chinese is old rose. The border features dark blue and golden beige.

Condition

You are not the first to appreciate this Chinese. It has had owners before you who have cherished and used it. It was hand knotted about 1910. It has been thoroughly cleaned and only partially restored condition but is in good condition. We have not completely restored this Chinese because we think it is as it is effect. If you would like, we will of course restore the rug further for you. We can restore almost any rug to an almost perfect condition.

Material

Chinese rugs are hand knotted from silky shiny wool. For the production of high quality Chinese rugs the coat of the Tibetan goat is used. The knot density is, as is typical in Chinese rugs, relatively low and the pile is shorn long.

Wool is obtained through the gentle shearing of sheep. Virgin wool is a sustainable, natural raw material with a number of impressive properties: Due to wool's natural fat content, the surface repels water droplets and is thus naturally impervious to dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, has a regulating effect on the indoor climate and muffles sound. The weft and warp threads of this Chinese are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and stretchable and, therefore, ideal for a durable backing fabric.
