Place of origin

This rug has been knotted in Bidjar, in the province of Kermanshah in the northwest of Iran. Bijar rugs are among the most solid and the highest quality oriental rugs. The majority of the population in Bijar are Kurds.

The Kurdish Bijars use a particularly thick weft yarn, which is extremely hard. The result is a plank-hard, extremely durable rug. Younger Bidjars in particular are decorated with the typical Herati pattern, which is also called the fish pattern. This old Bijar is more than 40 years old and a true collector's item.

Patterns

The luxuriant flower motifs of this Bijar are elegant and varied. The graceful vegetative symbols representing flowers, leaves and branches are artfully intertwined.

In the middle of the central field of this Bijar is the symmetrical center, also called medallion. The design of the field is arranged in such a way that it gives the impression that the medallion is floating on the field.

The embellished edging (border) forms a beautiful contrast to the center and creates a transition at the edge of the rug.

The background of this Bijar is dark blue. The border features beige and dark blue. The light blue center combines the colors beige and rusty red.

Condition

This Bijar has a story. It was hand knotted about 1930. It has been thoroughly cleaned and only partially restored condition but is in good condition. We have not completely restored this Bijar because we think it is as it is effect. If you would like, we will of course restore the rug further for you. We can restore almost any rug to an almost perfect condition.

Material

The pile of this Bijar has been hand-knotted from high-quality virgin wool. Virgin wool is obtained through the gentle shearing of sheep. Virgin wool is a sustainable, natural raw material with a number of impressive properties; due to the wool's natural fat content, the surface repels water droplets and is thus naturally impervious to dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, has a regulating effect on living climate and muffles sound. The weft and warp threads of this Bijar are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and stretchable and, therefore, ideal for a durable backing fabric.
