Place of origin

The Tekke are the main tribe of the Turkmen. They reside in the Republic of Turkmenistan and in Afghanistan. In the past, the Tekke lived nomadically and relied heavily on looting. Today most of them are settled and live as peaceful farmers. After the dissolution of the Soviet Empire, however, some have returned to nomadism. The Tekke mostly inhabit the now independent Republic of Turkmenistan, where they make rugs in the cities of Ashghabad and Mari and their vicinity.

During the communist revolution, numerous Tekke clans migrated to the neighboring countries of Afghanistan and Iran. Others settled in Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. Tekke rugs are among the famous Turkmen rugs whose patterns are also reproduced in Pakistan. Tekke rugs are also traded as Bukhara rugs. Bukhara (partly also Bokhara) is an oasis city in Uzbekistan, which is located along the former Silk Road. Although no rugs were knotted in Bukhara itself, the city gave its name to many oriental rugs, because they were traditionally exported to the West from Bukhara. But these rugs were knotted by Turkmen tribes like the Yomoudh or Tekke. This old Tekke is more than 40 years old and a true collector's item.

Patterns

The abstract, geometric composition creates the simple elegance of this Tekke. The pattern flatters the design of the room and does not take the attention away from its furniture, decoration and architectural elements. It creates a pleasant atmosphere without dominating the style of the room.

The repeating elements in the center field of this Tekke rug have no specific center (so-called repeating pattern). The repeating pattern has a calming but not boring effect. Rugs with repeating patterns are also called patterned.

The edge of the rug is decorated with an edging (border). The border forms a glorious contrast to the center.

The background of this Tekke is dark red. The border features dark red and dark green.

Condition

This Tekke has had admirers before you. It was hand knotted about 1940. We have cleaned it thoroughly and restored it lovingly. Therefore it is in very good condition despite its age.

Material

The pile of this Tekke has been hand-knotted from high-quality virgin wool. Virgin wool is obtained through the gentle shearing of sheep. Virgin wool is a sustainable, natural raw material with a number of impressive properties; due to the wool's natural fat content, the surface repels water droplets and is thus naturally impervious to dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, has a regulating effect on living climate and muffles sound. The backing (weft and warp threads) of this Tekke is made of virgin wool.
