This one, however, was knotted in India. \n\u003cbr\/\u003e\u003cbr\/\u003e\nExactly when rug production began in India is not known. The first rugs there were probably made during the cultural flowering of the Mughal dynasty, in the middle of the 16th century. In the middle of the 19th century, with the decline of the Mughal dynasty, Indian rug production fell into crisis. European companies whose only aim was export to the West took the place of the traditional court manufactories. Very similar rugs were produced in different towns and standardisation set in. Today the designs of hand-knotted Indian rugs can hardly be attributed to individual regions any more. Instead, the workshops have specialised in interpreting European and traditional Iranian designs adapted to Western taste. In terms of quality, rugs from India benefit from the long tradition of craftsmanship and the high quality of Indian materials. This rug was knotted in Bijar, in the province of Kermanshah in north-western Iran. Bijar rugs are among the sturdiest and finest Oriental rugs. Most of the people living in Bijar are Kurds. \n\u003cbr\/\u003e\u003cbr\/\u003e\nIn the Kurdish Bijar, a particularly thick and extremely hard weft yarn is beaten into the weave. The result is a board-stiff rug that is exceptionally hard-wearing. The younger Bijars in particular are decorated with the typical Herati pattern, also known as the fish pattern. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch4\u003e\u003cb\u003ePattern\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/h4\u003e\n\u003cp align=\"justify\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e The edge of the rug is framed by a surround (border). The border forms a splendid contrast to the centre.\n\u003cbr\/\u003e\u003cbr\/\u003e In the middle of this Bijar's central field lies the symmetrical centre, also known as the medallion. The design of the field is subordinate to the medallion, so that the medallion appears to float on the field.\n\u003cbr\/\u003e\u003cbr\/\u003e The overall impression is dominated by rust red and cream white. The border is worked in dark blue, blue-grey and rust red.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch4\u003e\u003cb\u003eCondition\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/h4\u003e\u003cp align=\"justify\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eThis Bijar has had admirers before you. The fringes could do with a repair. The edges are damaged in places. The pile is lightly worn. In a few spots you can see some white threads. That is quite normal with older rugs. They are the knot ends of the weft and warp weave, which work their way to the surface over the years. In substance, that is no great problem. It was hand-knotted around 1985. We cleaned it thoroughly and restored it with care. Despite its age, it is therefore in very good condition.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch4\u003e\u003cb\u003eMaterial\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/h4\u003e\n\u003cp align=\"justify\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eThe technique used to make the materials for the pile of this Bijar is more than 200 years old. The wool was dyed with natural dyes and spun by hand. Dyeing with natural or plant dyes is more complicated, more expensive and more time-consuming than dyeing with chemical colours. For a luminous red, for example, you need around one kilo of ground madder root as dyestuff per kilo of wool. For a strong yellow that isn't too pale, you even need two kilograms of the dyestuff weld per kilo of wool. Spinning the wool is time- and labour-intensive as well. What is more, fewer and fewer people still know how to spin wool by hand.\n\u003cbr\/\u003e\u003cbr\/\u003e\nBut the effort is worth it: dyeing with natural colours allows the high-quality wool to keep its natural lanolin content. Wool that has been dyed with natural dyes and spun by hand creates fascinating, shifting patterns. The charm of hand-spun wool, with its slight irregularities and natural shades, comes into its own as a contrast in modern interiors, but just as much in rooms furnished in a more traditional or country-house style. The weft and warp threads of this Bijar are made of cotton.
