Place of origin

Knotting in Nepal has only begun since the escape of the Dalai Lama and the Tibetans accompanying him in 1959. Under the direction of the dedicated Zurich importer, Jo Iten-Maritz, the homeless were taught to knot rugs with traditional patterns according to the Tibetan tradition from 1966 onwards. Once the designs of the rugs were adapted to contemporary, Western tastes, the amount of knotting in Nepal increased considerably. The central shopping point is the capital city of Kathmandu. Most of the production facilities are also located there.

Nepal rugs are knotted using a special technique. When knotting, a kind of continuous knot is looped linearly over a rod, so that a row of loops is created in a horizontal sequence. After the knotting rod is completely covered with these loops, they are cut open from above in this area, so that the pile fans out and a velour is created. This finally gives the knot the shape of a Persian knot. However, this quick process is only possible because the Nepal Tibetan rugs are hardly patterned and are plain in many areas.

Patterns

The pile is a plain beige. The simple design is understated, but can also provide a great design accent. The monochrome appearance of this rug fits perfectly in any environment.

The round format of this hand-knotted Nepal Rug is very rare and is ideal for rooms with a round dining or living room table.

The plain a panel is framed by a border in light brown. This gives the rug depth despite its relatively simple design.

Material

The pile of this Nepal Rug has been hand-knotted from high-quality virgin wool. Virgin wool is obtained through the gentle shearing of sheep. Virgin wool is a sustainable, natural raw material with a number of impressive properties; due to the wool's natural fat content, the surface repels water droplets and is thus naturally impervious to dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, has a regulating effect on living climate and muffles sound. The weft and warp threads of this Nepal Rug are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and stretchable and, therefore, ideal for a durable backing fabric.

The colors of this carpet change depending on which side it is viewed from. It depends on whether the light falls on the line or against the line of the pile. We have therefore taken pictures of this rug from different perspectives.
