Origin and design

Rugs made in Afghanistan – so-called Afghan rugs – are unmistakable. In Afghanistan's cultural melting pot, weavers from Baluch, Turkmen, Kazakh and Uzbek tribes met, bringing influences from their countries of origin. During the 19th century, Turkoman tribes settled villages in Afghanistan, leading to Turkoman weaving styles in the region. The designs of different tribal groups, including Esari, Salor, Tekke and Yomut, are diverse. However, the use of intricate elephant foot patterns (called guls), vibrant red tones, decorative borders and ornamental end pieces ensures stylistic continuity.
