Origin and design

Bukhara (sometimes also spelled Bochara) is an oasis city in Uzbekistan, located on the ancient Silk Road. Although carpets were rarely woven in Bukhara itself, the city lends its name to many Oriental carpets because these were exported from Bukhara to the West. These carpets were woven by various Turkmen tribes, primarily in the Caucasus, Persia, and Afghanistan. Bukhara carpets are among the finest and most popular Central Asian carpets. For this reason, the design has been copied in many countries, especially Pakistan. These copies are traded as so-called Pakistani Bukhara carpets.
