Origin and design

Carpets were likely known in China from a very early period. The Mongol invasion around 1279, which not only brought Central Asian carpets but also used them for tents and saddlery, boosted the already existing local production in China. An exhibition in Saint Louis, USA, in 1903 sparked interest in Chinese carpets in the Western world. Soon after, carpets were being produced in China specifically for export to Europe and North America.
