Origin and design
Farahan is a district in the central Iranian province of Markazi. A classic floral pattern of carpets from the Mahallat region around the city of Sultanabad was named after it.The Mahallat region around the city of Sultanabad (formerly Arak) developed into an important center for the production of Persian export carpets starting in the 1870s. A significant factor in this development was the English import company Messrs. Ziegler & Co. Ltd., owned by a Swiss merchant, which also opened a branch in Mahallat in 1883.
These carpets, also known as Mahal, Ziegler-Mahal, or simply Ziegler, were woven in the surrounding villages according to Western color and pattern standards. The blend of European design principles in lighter, calmer colors and classic patterns in the style of Farahan and Sultanabad carpets was very well received in Europe.
These carpets, also called Mahal, Ziegler-Mahal, or simply Ziegler, were woven in the surrounding villages according to Western color and pattern standards.
The success was enormous, and Ziegler carpets became an international mark of quality. The exquisite design of the multi-petaled flowers is particularly impressive in Ziegler carpets. Well-preserved antique Ziegler carpets now fetch record prices, especially in the USA. For several years, these antique Ziegler designs have been reproduced in high quality in Pakistan and India.
The reissued Ziegler carpets, made from hand-spun wool dyed with natural colors, are part of a revival of hand-knotted carpets. This return to traditional techniques began in the early 1980s, driven in part by the DOBAG initiative. Initially, reproduction focused on the Ziegler carpets described above. Subsequently, the reproduction of almost all traditional Persian patterns began. This resulted in adaptations of antique carpets as well as contemporary designs with the charm of an antique carpet.
