This Ghasghai is a one-of-a-kind rug from Persien. Measuring 204 × 139 cm, it is a versatile small living-room rug that also works as an accent in a bedroom or entrance area. More than just a hard-wearing wool rug, its natural material and individual construction give this unique piece a character of its own. The knot density of this unique piece is specified as 160.000. Origin and design

The Ghashghai are a significant Persian nomadic people who have lived in southern Iran, in the Fars province, for centuries. They comprise seven tribes. The most important tribe of the Ghashghai, at least for carpet production, is the Kashghuli (also spelled Kashguli, Kashguli, Qashguli). Old and antique Ghashghai carpets are highly sought-after collector's items today. Ghashghai carpets are known as the king of Persian nomadic carpets.

A large proportion of Ghashghai carpets feature the so-called geometric Heibathlou pattern, a diamond-shaped central field with a rather simple medallion that is repeated in the corners. The central field is filled with an unusually large number of ornaments. The motifs range from stars, lions, and camels to trees, blossoms, and even boteh or paisley symbols. The motifs are sometimes stylized, sometimes depicted realistically. The frequently repeating motifs are never exactly the same. They differ considerably in their color schemes. The arrangement of symbols is rarely symmetrical. Longitudinal symmetry is frequently disregarded. Even the individual elements in the borders alternate in different colors. Small rows of squares at the edges of the carpets are typical. The variation in patterns stems from the fact that the Ghashghai had no knotting patterns and all carpets were knotted from memory and filled with interesting motifs.

Today, most Ghashghai are settled. Only because they have largely become sedentary are the Ghashghai able to produce large-format carpets. The few remaining nomadic clans migrate twice a year to the summer pastures in the Zagros Mountains. In autumn, they return to the milder winter quarters in the valley. The Ghashghai have a reputation for being particularly proud, industrious, and honorable. Even though the Ghashghai appear less wild and warlike today, they still have a considerable influence on Iranian domestic politics.
