Origin and design

Goltogh (also spelled Gholtogh, Goltog, Gholtog, Gholtug) carpets are woven by settled Kurds. They are similar to Bidjar carpets in terms of quality and texture. The firm, hard feel—as with Bidjar carpets—results from the special base fabric. The cotton warp is stretched very tightly, and the weft is beaten extremely firmly. The carpets are knotted using the Turkish knot.

Goltogh carpets are usually dark in color. A slender hexagon almost always dominates the central field, sometimes with floral embellishments at the top and bottom. The filler motifs—flowers, leaves, and occasionally animals—are highly stylized.
