Origin and design

Hamadan (also spelled Hamedan) carpets are woven near the city of Hamadan in northwestern Iran. This particular Hamadan carpet originates from the small village of Angelas. Hamadan lies amidst a well-irrigated fruit-growing region on the banks of the Qareh River, at the foot of the Zagros Mountains. Carpet weaving has a centuries-old tradition in this region. Hamedan is a collective name, as carpets from many of the surrounding areas are sold in the Hamedan market. A characteristic of Hamadan carpets is their single-weave construction. This means that a weft thread is inserted after each row of knots. Persian carpets are typically woven with two or three weft threads.
