Origin and design

The Turkish city of Hereke is known for its highly prized silk carpets. This tradition was fostered by the art-loving Sultan Abd-ul-Medjid (reigned 1839–1861), who in 1844 relocated the court carpet-weaving workshops from Cairo back to Hereke. Hand-knotted Hereke silk carpets are among the finest in the world, with a knot density of up to 6 million knots per square meter. Thanks to the knotting technique, the pattern is just as clearly visible on the reverse side as on the front. Antique Turkish carpets fetch top prices at renowned art auction houses. Typical motifs of Hereke carpets include flowers, branches and leaves, birds, the Tree of Life, and the so-called Mehrab or Mihrab pattern, a prayer niche depicted alongside oil lamps. Besides traditional motifs and typical Ottoman or Turkish patterns, Hereke silk carpets are also woven today with more modern designs adapted to contemporary tastes. Typical colors for Hereke silk carpets include a deep dark blue, a radiant red, a vibrant green, a bright yellow, and various natural tones in all shades.
