Origin and design

The city of Isfahan is one of the architectural gems of the Islamic world. Its artistic tradition, historic cityscape, and arguably unique architecture are all thanks to the Safavid dynasty and, in particular, Shah Abbas. Floral motifs are typical of Isfahan carpets. Four-sided or longitudinally symmetrical designs with a central medallion surrounded by arabesques, blossoms, or birds are common. The base color is usually classic red, but a vibrant blue and a light beige are also typical. With often more than 15 shades, Isfahan carpets are exceptionally colorful. The borders are frequently teal and decorated with floral tendrils and palmettes.

The fineness of Isfahan carpet knots is indicated in Iran by the term "cheft." Cheft are fine, usually blue, vertical lines along the lower cross-weave edges. The closer the lines, the finer the knot. ```

Even today, many Isfahan carpets bear a discreetly knotted inscription in Persian script along the bottom edge, known as the signature. This inscription displays the manufacturer's name, the country of origin (Isfahan), and often the country code, either the word "Iran" or the Iranian national flag in green, white, and red.

Carpets from the Seirafian manufactory, like this Isfahan carpet, are particularly prized. The late master weaver Haj Agha Reza Seirafian lived from 1881 to 1975. He is known today as the creator of the famous Seirafian carpets. Before turning to carpet production, Haj Agha Reza was a private banker in Isfahan. The Seirafian family still produces carpets based on Haj Agha Reza Seirafian's designs and patterns.
