Origin and design
The mountainous region of Kashmir in the Himalayas is divided. One-third belongs to Pakistan as a province, while the other two-thirds form the state of Jammu and Kashmiri, which is part of India. The population of the larger state is predominantly Muslim and aspires to independence. Hand-knotted carpets come exclusively from the Indian-administered part of Kashmir and are primarily woven in and around the provincial capital, Srinagar. Kashmir's silk carpets, typically woven on a cotton base, are particularly renowned. The colors of Kashmir carpets tend to be muted, and the patterns are influenced by traditional Persian designs. This has a long history; the Mughal emperors (1526-1857) once brought Persian carpet weavers to their court in India. This is why it is also referred to as the Indo-Persian style. According to another legend, however, the tributary Sultan of Kashmir had to send his son as a hostage to Timur (Tamerlane) in Samarkand in 1398. Here the young prince learned the craft of knotting and introduced it to Kashmir with knotters from Samarkand upon his return.
