Origin and design
The important nomadic people of the Ghashghai have lived in southern Iran, in the Fars province, for centuries. They comprise seven tribes. The most significant Ghashghai tribe, at least for carpet production, is the Kashghuli (also spelled Kashguli, Kashguli, Qashguli). The hand-knotted carpets of the Kashghuli enjoy an excellent reputation in Europe as well. They are usually high-pile and are hand-knotted with Turkish knots from the robust wool of fat-tailed sheep breeds.
Most Ghashghai have now settled down and are known as the main producers of Persian Gabbeh carpets. It is only because the Ghashghai have largely become sedentary that they are able to produce large-format carpets. The few remaining nomadic clans migrate twice a year to their summer pastures in the Zagros Mountains. In autumn, they return to their milder winter quarters in the valley. The Ghashghai have a reputation for being particularly proud, hardworking, and honorable. Even though the Ghashghai are less fierce and warlike today, they still exert a considerable influence on Iranian domestic politics.
The demand for traditional patterns has led to the Kashghuli, in particular, reviving their traditional tribal designs. These are constantly being adapted with new, contemporary design ideas and a greater variety of colors.
Hinweis zu den Fotos
The colors of this rug change depending on which side it is viewed from. It depends on whether the light falls on the line or against the line of the pile. We have therefore taken pictures of this rug from different perspectives.
