180 × 120 cm at a glance
- For reading corners, children's rooms, home offices and small living areas
- Forms a zone of its own, but does not replace a living-room rug under the sofa
- Under a coffee table it leaves enough room all round for your feet
- Hand-knotted one-of-a-kind pieces with slightly varying dimensions
Where this size really works
Under an armchair with a footstool, 180 × 120 cm makes a self-contained reading corner — armchair and stool stand fully on the rug, with a margin visible all round. In a home office the size covers the area under desk and chair, so the chair doesn't roll over the edge when you push back. In a living room it only works if the rug lies in front of the sofa and not underneath it.
What to look for when buying
If the rug lies in front of the sofa, it should be at least as wide as the seat — otherwise it looks like a small mat. With sofas from about 200 cm wide, that makes 240 × 170 cm the more honest size. In a children's room what counts above all is that the wool is untreated and the colours natural; the floor is played on, not just walked across.
FAQ
Common questions
No. For chairs to stay on the rug when pushed back, you need 60 to 70 cm beyond the table edge on every side. Even a small table for four therefore calls for 300 × 200 cm.
As a play area in the middle of the room, yes. If the rug is to cover the whole room, 240 × 170 cm is the more suitable size.
Wool is hard-wearing, dirt-repellent and can be cleaned. The basics are all in its favour. What matters is a non-slip underlay, so the rug stays put during boisterous play.
