Where this size really works

In front of a narrow door, 60 × 40 cm covers exactly the spot where you stop to take off your shoes. In the kitchen it goes in front of the sink, where you stand the longest. Beside the bed it is enough for the first step in the morning — if you want the whole length of the bed on wool, a 120 × 80 cm is the better option.

What to look for when buying

Small pieces take the heaviest wear per square metre. Densely woven Kelims and short-pile wool qualities cope with that far better than soft, high pile. Many pieces in this size are fragments of larger rugs — they often carry the loveliest section of a pattern and are correspondingly singular. A non-slip underlay is not an accessory here, it is a prerequisite.
