Origin
Heriz (also Heris) is an important place of origin for hand-knotted rugs. Heriz lies in the far west of Iran, on the border with Azerbaijan. Rugs from Heriz are famous for their beautifully geometric designs. Also typical of Heriz rugs is the lustrous wool with its wonderful colouring. This old Heriz is around 100 years old and a real collector's piece.
Pattern
The abstract, geometric composition is what gives this Heriz its understated elegance. The pattern flatters the design of the room without drawing attention away from the furniture, the décor or the architectural details. It creates a pleasant atmosphere without dominating the style of the room.
The edge of the rug is graced by a surround (border). The border forms a wonderful contrast to the centre.
At the heart of this Heriz's central field lies the symmetrical centre, also known as the medallion. The design of the field is subordinate to the medallion, so that the medallion appears to float on the field.
The background of this Heriz is rust red. The border is kept in dark blue. Rust red and beige are combined within the dark blue centre.
Condition
This Heriz has had admirers before you. It was hand-knotted around 1920. It has been thoroughly cleaned and is in good, though only partly restored, condition. All in all the rug is in very good condition after restoration, even if the pile has grown a little thin over the years. We have not fully restored this Heriz because we feel it has a special charm just as it is. If you would like us to, we will of course gladly restore it further for you. We can bring almost any rug back to near-perfect condition.
Material
The pile of this Heriz was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by shearing sheep gently. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a range of impressive properties: thanks to the natural lanolin in the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and dampens sound. The weft and warp threads of this Heriz are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, which makes it particularly suited to a hard-wearing foundation.
A note on the photos
Child labour? No thanks.
Child labour? No thanks. Children belong in school, not at a knotting frame or a loom. For us it therefore goes without saying that we only offer rugs made under fair conditions and without child labour.
We attach particular importance to humane working conditions and tolerate no child labour at any of our producers. Thank you for helping us to ensure fair conditions.
That is why we support the initiative Care & Fair against child labour in the rug trade.
