Place of origin
This rug has been knotted in Bidjar, in the province of Kermanshah in the northwest of Iran. Bijar rugs are among the most solid and the highest quality oriental rugs. The majority of the population in Bijar are Kurds.
The Kurdish Bijars use a particularly thick weft yarn, which is extremely hard. The result is a plank-hard, extremely durable rug. Younger Bidjars in particular are decorated with the typical Herati pattern, which is also called the fish pattern. This antique Bijar is a collector's item. It is about 100 years old and, therefore, a really special piece. Antique rugs like this Bijar are still very popular and are sold at top prices by renowned auction houses.
Patterns
The edge of the rug is decorated with an edging (border). The border forms a excellent contrast to the center.
In the middle of the central field of this Bijar is the symmetrical center, also called medallion. The design of the field is arranged in such a way that it gives the impression that the medallion is floating on the field.
The repeating elements in the center field of this Bijar rug have no specific center (so-called repeating pattern). The repeating pattern has a calming but not boring effect. Rugs with repeating patterns are also called patterned.
The background of this Bijar is rusty red. The border features rusty red, blue gray and beige. The blue gray center combines the colors pink and beige.
Condition
You are not the first to enjoy this Bijar. It has had owners before you, who have cherished and used it. It was hand knotted about 1920 and has served devotedly ever since. All in all, it is still in good condition and can still bring satisfaction for decades. We have not restored this Bijar, because we think it is as it is a special charm. If that is what you would like, we will be happy to restore the rug for you, of course.
Material
The pile of this Bijar has been hand-knotted from high-quality virgin wool. Virgin wool is obtained through the gentle shearing of sheep. Virgin wool is a sustainable, natural raw material with a number of impressive properties; due to the wool's natural fat content, the surface repels water droplets and is thus naturally impervious to dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, has a regulating effect on living climate and muffles sound. The weft and warp threads of this Bijar are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and stretchable and, therefore, ideal for a durable backing fabric.
