Origin
Qom is a relatively young provenance for Persian rugs. The city of Qom (also Ghom, Ghoum, Goum) lies in the centre of Iran, about 100 km south of the capital, Tehran. Since Qom had no long knotting tradition of its own to build on, patterns were – and still are – adopted from other weaving regions. Over time, however, a distinctive style grew out of this. Today the silk rugs from Qom are among the most celebrated and finest rugs in the world. The field of Qom rugs often has a light ground, decorated with finely drawn medallion patterns or all-over boteh or vase motifs.
Pattern
The decorated surround (border) forms a beautiful contrast to the centre and shapes the transition at the edge of the rug.
The lavish floral motifs of this Qom are elegant and wonderfully varied. The graceful plant symbols, depicting blossoms, leaves and branches, are artfully intertwined.
At the heart of this Qom's central field lies the symmetrical centrepiece, also known as the medallion. The design of the field is subordinate to the medallion, so that the medallion seems to float on the field.
The background of this Qom is beige-yellow. Dark red and beige-yellow also dominate the overall impression. The border is worked in dark red, beige and light brown. The light blue centre combines olive green and terracotta.
Material
The pile of this Qom was hand-knotted from kork wool and silk. Kork wool, also written kurk, is a particularly fine yarn that feels almost velvety to the touch. It is taken from the neck, the belly and the inner legs of the sheep and is of especially high quality. The pattern of this Qom is picked out in lustrous pure silk, which is reeled by hand from the cocoons of the silk moth. The silk elements create a shimmering contrast and let the colours glow in different facets, depending on how the light falls. The weft and warp threads of this Qom are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, which makes it ideal for a hard-wearing foundation.

Child labour? No thanks.
Child labour? No thanks. Children belong in school, not at a knotting frame or a loom. For us it therefore goes without saying that we only offer rugs made under fair conditions and without child labour.
We attach particular importance to humane working conditions and tolerate no child labour at any of our producers. Thank you for helping us to ensure fair conditions.
That is why we support the initiative Care & Fair against child labour in the rug trade.
