Origin
With their luminous colours and geometric patterns, Kelims are valued all over the world. Originally these hand-woven rugs, also known as Kilim or Qilim, were made for the weavers' own needs. Nomads and farmers used them not only as floor coverings, but also as tent or wall hangings, blankets, cushions or even bags. Because Kelims were constant companions in everyday life, their patterns – however plain they may seem at first glance – always tell personal stories and hold a special meaning for the weavers and their families.
In Europe in particular, Kelims from Turkey, the Caucasus, Iran, Afghanistan and the Turkmen region are well known and much loved. Hand-woven rugs like these are created, though, wherever the art of rug knotting is deeply rooted in the culture. Their craftsmanship and the emotional bond with their origins make Kelims more than home accessories – they are timeless cultural treasures.
Material
This rug was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. The new wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep.
A note on the photos
Child labour? No thanks.
Child labour? No thanks. Children belong in school, not at a knotting frame or a loom. For us it therefore goes without saying that we only offer rugs made under fair conditions and without child labour.
We attach particular importance to humane working conditions and tolerate no child labour at any of our producers. Thank you for helping us to ensure fair conditions.
That is why we support the initiative Care & Fair against child labour in the rug trade.
