Geometric Kordi, rust red with border and diamonds

Origin

Kordi (also Kord or Kurdi) is a collective term for rugs from Iran that are hand-knotted by Kurds. Koliai and Khorasan rugs are therefore, if you like, Kordi rugs too. As a rule, Kurdi rugs come from the Khorasan province. Less often they also come from the Turkmen-Afghan region.

When knotting rugs, Kurds draw on all the classic provenances (source, origin). They do not, however, copy the traditional patterns slavishly, but interpret them in their own distinctive way. The colouring in particular often differs markedly from the original patterns. Among Kordi rugs you will therefore find the most varied designs, though mostly in a rather dark palette. In the central field of this piece there are 3 large star-shaped diamonds that call a medallion to mind.

Pattern

The abstract, geometric composition gives this Kordi its understated elegance. The pattern flatters the design of the room and never draws attention away from the furniture, the décor and the architectural elements. It creates a pleasant atmosphere without dominating the style of the room.

The decorated surround (border) forms a beautiful contrast to the centre and shapes the transition at the edge of the rug.

In the pattern of this Kordi, it is above all the diamonds that stand out. Diamonds are rhombuses standing on one point, whose four equal sides can be jagged, stepped or set with hooks in the Oriental rug. The diamond is one of the oldest basic forms in the Oriental rug. In the Islamic world it carries a symbolic meaning: it stands for the immortality of the soul. That is why it is very often found as a filler motif.

The background of this Kordi is rust red. The border is worked in dark blue and beige.

Condition

This Kordi had admirers before you. It was hand-knotted around 1970. We have cleaned it thoroughly and restored it with care. Despite its age, it is therefore in very good condition.

Material

The pile of this Kordi was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a number of impressive qualities: thanks to the natural lanolin content of the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is thus naturally protected against dirt. Wool also provides excellent thermal insulation, has a balancing effect on the indoor climate and dampens sound. The foundation (weft and warp threads) of this Kordi is made of new wool.
