Old US Import China Rug

There is only one rug like this one in beige and dark blue: it combines traditional craftsmanship with timeless elegance. At around 160,000 knots per m², the workmanship is correspondingly demanding, as you can see in the precise drawing of the pattern and the finely worked details. Its 129 × 78 cm make it a bedside rug. It also cuts a fine figure in a reading corner. Colouring and texture give the room a homely atmosphere – with a character no other rug shares.

Origin

Rugs were in all likelihood known in China very early on. The Mongol invasion around 1279, which brought Central Asian rugs into the country that were used as tents and saddle gear, gave a boost to the local production that probably already existed in China at the time. An exhibition in Saint Louis in the USA in 1903 awakened interest in Chinese rugs in the Western world. Soon afterwards, rugs were being made in China solely for export to Europe and North America.

A special case is the so-called American China rugs, which were knotted between 1900 and 1940 specifically for the American market. The colours and patterns of the American China rugs are more restrained than those of traditional China rugs and were adapted to the US American interior style of the time. Only a very few pieces found their way from the USA to Europe. This is why the so-called American China rugs are especially rare in Europe.

This Old US Import China rug is around 86 years old and a true collector's piece.

Material

The pile of this Old US Import China rug was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a number of impressive qualities: thanks to the natural lanolin in the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also provides excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and absorbs sound.

The weft and warp threads of this Old US Import China rug are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, which makes it particularly well suited to a hard-wearing foundation.

Condition

This old US import Chinese rug has a story to tell. To be shown at boot! It was knotted around 1940. We have cleaned it thoroughly and restored it with care. As a result it is – despite its age – in very good condition.
