120 × 80 cm at a glance
- For the entrance area, beside the bed and under the desk chair
- Narrow enough for a door to swing clear above it
- Pile under about 12 mm, otherwise the door catches as it opens
- Hand-made one-of-a-kind pieces; variations of a few centimetres in size are normal
Where this size really works
Just inside the front door, 120 × 80 cm covers the area where two people can stand side by side. Beside the bed it reaches from the edge of the bedside table to about the middle of the mattress. In a home office it sits under chair and desk, but only with small desks — as soon as the chair rolls back over the edge, you need 180 × 120 cm.
What to look for when buying
The pile height decides whether this size works day to day. Anything over about 12 mm can catch under a door and has to be nudged back into place every time you open it. Under an office chair on castors, a flat, densely woven quality is the right choice as well: a high pile slows the castors and wears away in the same spots. On a smooth floor, an anti-slip underlay belongs under this size too.
FAQ
Common questions
For a short hallway, yes. From about two metres of walking length on, the size looks like a cut-off piece — in that case a runner works better.
Yes, if it is flat-woven. Wool Kelims cope well with kitchen traffic. In the direct splash zone by the hob we would not lay a hand-knotted rug.
With a desk up to about 120 cm wide, yes. At larger workstations the chair rolls over the edge and the castors snag on the rim.
