Hallway rugs, bed surrounds or kitchen rugs
Rug runners
When choosing a rug for the hallway, size and durability matter most. The hallway is both entrance and thoroughfare – and the first impression visitors get of your home.
A narrow hallway looks wider with a striped runner without a border. A large entrance hall feels more inviting with a rug that has a pronounced border and a field of small, crisply drawn ornaments. If little daylight reaches the hallway, a very dark rug will make it feel gloomy; a few ceiling spotlights bring the pattern back to life.
Because everyone walks through here, the rug has to be hard-wearing and easy to clean – cotton rugs are not suitable. Stains and dirt show least on finely knotted, darker rugs with a small-scale pattern.
Designer rugs suit modern interiors, Ziegler rugs suit a country-house style, Oriental rugs suit classic rooms – and Kelim runners work almost anywhere. A deliberate clash of styles is often what makes a hallway truly cosy. Incidentally, long rugs and gallery runners aren't just for the hallway; they also work in the bedroom or as a kitchen rug.
Which size is right?
- For long hallways, along the kitchen units, narrow passages and around the bed
- Rule of thumb: leave a hand's width of floor visible along each long side
- Pile under about 12 mm so doors swing freely
- Hand-knotted one-of-a-kind pieces – length and width vary from piece to piece
In the hallway
In the hallway, the runner shouldn't reach the walls: with about 10 to 15 cm of space on each side, the passage looks wider, not narrower – so a 100 cm wide hallway takes a runner of around 70 to 80 cm. Ideally it stops just short of the door frame so the door doesn't drag it along.
In the kitchen
In the kitchen, the runner lies along the worktop, exactly where you stand while cooking – wool is far more comfortable here than any rubber mat.
Around the bed
As a bed surround, place a runner on either side of the bed, roughly as long as the bed – or one runner across the foot of it. That way you step onto wool in the morning instead of a cold floor.
What to look for when buying
With runners, proportion matters more than exact measurements. A piece measuring 78 × 285 cm serves the same purpose as one measuring 80 × 300 cm – nobody in the hallway will notice the difference. What matters more is that the length suits the stretch you walk: better slightly shorter with space to the wall than a runner that ruckles up in front of the door. On tiles and parquet, a non-slip underlay belongs underneath, especially with runners.
Most of our runners are 70 to 100 cm wide and two to four metres long; the precisely measured size of each piece is given in its title.
Frequently asked questions about runners
About 30 to 50 cm shorter than the stretch you walk, so that floor remains visible at both ends. In very long hallways, two runners laid one after the other with a deliberate gap look better than a single overlong piece.
Leave 10 to 15 cm of floor clear along each long side. So a 100 cm wide hallway takes a runner around 70 to 80 cm wide.
Most of our runners are two to four metres long, some even longer; there are also shorter pieces for small entrance halls. The precisely measured size of each piece is given in the product title.
That depends on the pile height and the gap between door and floor. With a pile of up to about 12 mm, this is not a problem in most homes. If in doubt, measure before you order.
Without an underlay, yes. A non-slip rug underlay keeps the runner in place and also protects it from wearing too quickly.
A densely knotted wool runner with a short pile, or a flat-woven Kelim. Both are hard-wearing, and stains show least on small-scale, somewhat darker patterns.
Vacuum it regularly in the direction of the pile and beat it out thoroughly at least once a year. For a deep clean, we offer a rug cleaning service.
