Antique US Import Chinese rug

There is only one rug like this in dark blue and yellow: it combines traditional craftsmanship with timeless elegance. A knot density of around 60,000 knots per m² makes the elaborate workmanship visible – right down to the finely executed details. At 150 × 94 cm it is well placed as a bedside rug. It also cuts a fine figure in a bedroom or hallway. Colour and texture give the room a homely atmosphere – with a character no other rug shares.

Origin

Rugs were in all likelihood known in China very early on. The Mongol invasion around 1279, which brought Central Asian rugs into the country that were used as tents and saddle gear, gave a boost to the local production that probably already existed in China at the time. An exhibition in Saint Louis in the USA in 1903 awakened interest in Chinese rugs in the Western world. Soon afterwards, rugs were being made in China solely for export to Europe and North America.

A special case is the so-called American China rugs, which were knotted between 1900 and 1940 specifically for the American market. The colours and patterns of the American China rugs are more restrained than those of traditional China rugs and were adapted to the US American interior style of the time. Only a very few pieces found their way from the USA to Europe. This is why the so-called American China rugs are especially rare in Europe.

This antique US Import China Rug is a collector's piece. It is around 96 years old, and that alone makes it a truly special piece. Antique rugs like this US Import China Rug remain as sought-after as ever and fetch top prices at renowned auction houses.

Material

The technique used to produce the materials for the pile of this antique US import Chinese rug is more than 200 years old. The wool was dyed with natural dyes and spun by hand. Dyeing with natural or plant dyes is more complicated, more expensive and more time-consuming than dyeing with chemical colours. For a luminous red, for example, you need around one kilo of ground madder root as dyestuff for every kilo of wool. For a strong yellow that is not too pale, you even need two kilograms of dyer's weld for every kilo of wool. Spinning the wool is also time-consuming and labour-intensive. On top of that, fewer and fewer people still master the craft of spinning wool by hand.

But the effort is worth it: dyeing with natural colours allows the high-quality wool to keep its natural oil content. Wool that has been dyed with natural colours and spun by hand creates fascinating, shimmering patterns. The charm of hand-spun wool, with its slight irregularities and natural shades, comes into its own as a contrast in modern interiors, but equally in rooms furnished in a more traditional or country style.

The weft and warp threads of this antique US Import China rug are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, which makes it particularly well suited to a hard-wearing foundation.
