Old Keshan

There is only one rug like this in dark blue and light blue: it brings together traditional craftsmanship and timeless elegance. A knot density of approx. 360,000 knots per m² makes the painstaking workmanship visible – right down to the finely worked details. At 203 × 138 cm it is well placed as a rug for the bedroom or study. It shows to equally good effect in a child's room or a dressing room. Colouring and texture lend the room a homely atmosphere – with a character no other rug shares.

Origin

The central Persian city of Keshan (also written Kashan or Keschan) lies between the mountain slopes of the Zagros range and the Persian desert regions. Thanks to its climate and the caravans that crossed the country, it was – at least until the Safavids moved their seat of government to Isfahan – a flourishing metropolis, known above all for its fabric and rug production. To this day the city is shaped by the elegance and splendour of that era. Keshan rugs are artful textiles made in an age-old tradition. In Keshan, production traditionally took place in the weavers' own homes. The pile is typically knotted from extremely soft wool, which makes it particularly dense and compact.

This old Keshan is around 106 years old and a real collector's piece.

Material

The pile of this Old Keshan was knotted from what is known as cork wool. Cork wool – also written kurk wool – is an exceptionally fine-threaded knotting yarn that feels almost velvety. Cork wool is taken from the neck, the belly and the inner sides of the sheep's legs and is particularly high in quality.

The weft and warp threads of this Old Keshan are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, which makes it especially well suited to a hard-wearing foundation weave.

Condition

This Old Keshan has a history. In places, the pile of this piece has become a little thinner. It was knotted in around 1920. We have cleaned it thoroughly and restored it with care. Despite its age, it is therefore in very good condition.
