Rugs 240 × 170 cm

240 × 170 cm is the most-bought living room format. It carries a seating group with a sofa up to about 200 cm wide, leaves floor visible all round and suits rooms from roughly 16 square metres. If you are unsure what size your room can take, this one is almost always right. All the rugs are hand-knotted one-of-a-kind pieces.

Where this size really works

In the living room the rule is: the rug should be wider than the sofa so that the seating group reads as one. With a rug width of 170 cm and a sofa of 190 to 200 cm, the seat stands on the rug with its front legs and the coffee table sits entirely on it. For a modular sofa with a chaise longue this size is no longer enough — then 250 × 200 cm is the next size up.

What to look for when buying

Because this size is bought so often, it is quality rather than size that makes the difference. Look at the knot density and at whether the rug is made from hand-spun wool — both determine how it will look in ten years. With underfloor heating, flat-woven or finely knotted pieces make more sense than thick qualities, because they let the heat through. You will find answers on care, underlay and cleaning in our rug glossary.
