Old Bijar
This one-of-a-kind piece in dark red and dark blue brings together traditional craftsmanship and timeless elegance. A knot density of approx. 300,000 knots per m² makes the painstaking work visible – right down to the finely worked details. At 338 × 228 cm, it is well placed as a large living room rug. It looks just as good in an open-plan living and dining area. The harmonious colouring and the distinctive texture give any room an exclusive, welcoming atmosphere. A rug of this quality is far more than a furnishing item – it is a piece of traditional textile art with a character of its own and lasting value.

Origin
This rug was knotted in Bijar, in the province of Kermanshah in north-western Iran. Bijar rugs are among the sturdiest and finest Oriental rugs. The majority of the population in Bijar are Kurds. In the Kurdish Bijar, a particularly thick and extremely hard weft yarn is beaten into the weave. The result is a board-stiff rug that is exceptionally hard-wearing. The younger Bijars in particular are decorated with the typical Herati pattern, also known as the fish pattern.
This old Bijar is around 66 years old and a real collector's piece.
Material
The pile of this Old Bijar was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by shearing sheep gently. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a number of impressive properties: thanks to the natural lanolin content of the wool, the surface repels drops of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also provides excellent thermal insulation, has a regulating effect on the indoor climate and dampens sound. The weft and warp threads of this Old Bijar are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, which makes it especially well suited to a hard-wearing foundation weave.
Condition
You are not the first to take a liking to this old Bijar. It has had owners before you who valued and used it. It was knotted around 1960. It has been thoroughly cleaned and is in good but unrestored condition. The fringes could do with a repair. The sides are damaged in places. The pile is evenly worn. The rug has a tear 3 cm long. On one side, parts of the border are missing. We have not restored this old Bijar because we feel it has a special charm exactly as it is. If you would prefer otherwise, we will of course gladly restore the rug for you. Either way, this old Bijar will give you pleasure for decades to come.
A note on the photos
Child labour? No thanks.
Child labour? No thanks. Children belong in school, not at a knotting frame or a loom. For us it therefore goes without saying that we only offer rugs made under fair conditions and without child labour.
We attach particular importance to humane working conditions and tolerate no child labour at any of our producers. Thank you for helping us to ensure fair conditions.
That is why we support the initiative Care & Fair against child labour in the rug trade.
