Tabriz

There is only one rug like this in light red: it combines traditional craftsmanship with timeless elegance. With a knot density of approx. 490,000 knots per m², the painstaking work shows above all in the precise drawing of the design and the fine detailing. At 207 × 203 cm it works well as a square rug. It is just as effective beneath a seating group. Colouring and texture lend the room a homely atmosphere – with a character no other rug shares.

Origin

Standing on Persia's northern border at the crossroads of countless caravan routes, the city of Tabriz (also written Tabris or Täbriz) has always been a melting pot of different ethnic and religious groups. Although the city lies on the border with Azerbaijan, the dialect spoken in Tabriz is related to Turkish. The bazaars of Tabriz have traded in craftwork for centuries, and above all in rugs from the surrounding villages.

Material

The pile of this Tabriz was hand-knotted from kork wool and silk. Kork wool – also spelled kurk – is an especially fine-threaded knotting yarn with an almost velvety feel. It is taken from the neck, the belly and the inner legs of the sheep and is of particularly high quality. The pattern of this Tabriz is picked out in lustrous pure silk, which is obtained by hand from the cocoons of the silkworm. The silk elements create a shimmering contrast and make the colours glow in different shades, depending on how the light falls.

The weft and warp threads of this Tabriz are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, which makes it particularly suitable for a hard-wearing foundation weave.

Condition

You are not the first to take a liking to this Tabriz. It has had owners before you who valued it and lived with it. It was knotted around 2010. We have cleaned it thoroughly and restored it with care. As a result it is – despite its age – in very good condition.
