Tabriz

This rug in light brown and dark brown exists in this form only once: it brings together traditional craftsmanship and timeless elegance. At approx. 420,000 knots per m² the workmanship is correspondingly painstaking, as you can see in the precise drawing and the finely worked details. Its 306 × 303 cm make it a square rug. It looks just as good in the living room. Colour and texture lend the room a homely atmosphere – with a character no other rug shares.

Origin

Standing on Persia's northern border at the crossroads of countless caravan routes, the city of Tabriz (also written Tabris or Täbriz) has always been a melting pot of different ethnic and religious groups. Although the city lies on the border with Azerbaijan, the dialect spoken in Tabriz is related to Turkish. The bazaars of Tabriz have traded in craftwork for centuries, and above all in rugs from the surrounding villages.

Material

The pile of this Tabriz was hand-knotted from kork wool and silk. Kork wool – also spelled kurk – is an especially fine-threaded knotting yarn with an almost velvety feel. It is taken from the neck, the belly and the inner legs of the sheep and is of particularly high quality. The pattern of this Tabriz is picked out in lustrous pure silk, which is obtained by hand from the cocoons of the silkworm. The silk elements create a shimmering contrast and make the colours glow in different shades, depending on how the light falls.

The weft and warp threads of this Tabriz are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, which makes it particularly suitable for a hard-wearing foundation weave.

Condition

You are not the first to take a liking to this Tabriz. It has had owners before you who treasured and used it. There are a few smaller, inconspicuous stains to report. It was knotted around 2000. We have cleaned it thoroughly and restored it with care. Despite its age, it is therefore in very good condition.
