Mamlouk

Every rug is a one-of-a-kind piece – this example of the Mamlouk type comes from Pakistan. At 299 × 248 cm it works well as a large living-room rug. It comes into its own just as readily in the dining room beneath a table for six to eight people. More than just a hard-wearing wool rug: the natural material and the handcrafted execution give it a character of its own. The knot density is given as 250k-300k.

Origin

Mamlouk rugs (occasionally spelled Mamluk) were knotted in Egypt above all in the 15th century and are found almost exclusively in museums today. This Mamlouk rug is a new take on the classic pattern, which is defined by a wealth of different geometric shapes that give the rug a kaleidoscopic effect.

Material

The pile of this Mamlouk was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing live sheep. It is a renewable, natural raw material with a whole range of impressive qualities: thanks to the wool's natural lanolin content, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also provides excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and absorbs sound.
