Qom in pure silk

This rug in terracotta and gold exists only once in this form: it unites traditional craftsmanship with timeless elegance. With a knot density of around 1,000.000 knots per m², the elaborate work shows above all in the precise drawing and the fine execution of the details. At 120 × 78 cm it suits use as a bedside rug. It also looks at home in a reading corner. Colouring and texture give the room a welcoming atmosphere – with a character no other rug shares.

Origin

Qom is a relatively young provenance for Persian rugs. The city of Qom (also Ghom, Gom, Ghoum, Goum) lies in central Iran, about 100 km south of the capital Tehran. As there was no old knotting tradition in Qom to build on, patterns were and still are adopted from other weaving regions. Over time, however, a style of its own has grown out of this. The silk rugs from Qom are today among the most famous and finest rugs in the world. The field of rugs from Qom often has a light ground decorated with finely drawn medallion patterns or all-over boteh or vase designs.

Material

The silk pile of this Qom in pure silk makes the colours of the pattern glow in different shades, depending on how the light falls. It makes this Qom in pure silk a real highlight and creates an atmosphere in the room that is cosy and at the same time very elegant and refined. Silk is obtained by hand from the cocoons of the silkworm. Because the individual silk filaments are extremely long, very fine yarns can be spun that are light in weight yet still tear-resistant. Fine yarn allows smaller rug knots to be tied, and with them finer patterns. This is why the world's finest rugs are hand-knotted from pure silk.

In this pure silk Qom, even the foundation has been made from pure silk. Because the material of the weft and warp threads is so thin yet hard-wearing, a particularly fine knotting – and therefore a particularly fine pattern – is possible.

Condition

You are not the first to take a liking to this Qom in pure silk. It has had owners before you who valued and used it. It was knotted in around 1980. It has been thoroughly cleaned and is in good but unrestored condition. This piece is a little faded and shows slight pile distortion. We have not restored this Qom in pure silk, because we feel it has a special presence just as it is. If you would prefer otherwise, we will of course gladly restore the rug for you. Either way, this Qom in pure silk will give you pleasure for decades to come.
