Old Meschad

Craftsmanship and timeless elegance come together in this rug in light red and dark blue. At approx. 250,000 knots per m², the work behind it is correspondingly demanding, as the precise drawing and the finely worked details show. Its 345 × 263 cm make it a rug for generous living spaces. It also looks at home beneath a large dining table. Colouring and texture lend any room a welcoming, exclusive note – a one-of-a-kind piece made to last for years.

Origin

In the eastern part of Persia lies the region of Khorasan (land of the rising sun), with Meschad (also Maschad, Meschhed or Meshad) as its capital. Originally the Timurid capital of Herat, which lies in today's Afghanistan, was also part of this region. The typical patterns of rugs from Meschad go back to the 19th and 20th centuries and are made up of small-scale elements that seem to repeat endlessly, sometimes arranged around medallions.

This Old Meschad is around 46 years old and a genuine connoisseur's piece.

Material

The pile of this Old Meschad was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a number of impressive properties: thanks to the wool's natural oil content, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and dampens sound.

The weft and warp threads of this Old Meschad are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, which makes it particularly well suited to a hard-wearing foundation weave.

Condition

This Old Meschad has had admirers before you. The pile is worn in places. It was knotted around 1980. We have cleaned it thoroughly and restored it with care. It is therefore – despite its age – in very good condition.
