Old Meschad

This rug in light red brings together traditional craftsmanship and timeless elegance. At around 250,000 knots per m², the work involved is correspondingly demanding, as you can see in the precise drawing and the finely executed details. Its 345 × 263 cm make it a large living room rug. As a one-of-a-kind piece it lends the room a character all of its own and holds its value far beyond short-lived trends.

Origin

In the eastern part of Persia lies the region of Khorasan (land of the rising sun), with Meschad (also Maschad, Meschhed or Meshad) as its capital. Originally the Timurid capital of Herat, which lies in today's Afghanistan, was also part of this region. The typical patterns of rugs from Meschad go back to the 19th and 20th centuries and are made up of small-scale elements that seem to repeat endlessly, sometimes arranged around medallions.

This Old Meschad is around 46 years old and a genuine connoisseur's piece.

Material

The pile of this Old Meschad was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a number of impressive properties: thanks to the wool's natural oil content, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and dampens sound.

The weft and warp threads of this Old Meschad are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, which makes it particularly well suited to a hard-wearing foundation weave.

Condition

This Old Meschad has had admirers before you. The pile is worn in places. It was knotted around 46. We have cleaned it thoroughly and restored it with care. It is therefore – despite its age – in very good condition.
