Meschad

This rug in red combines traditional craftsmanship with timeless elegance. The knot density of roughly 160k-200k knots per m² makes the demanding workmanship visible – right down to the fine detailing. At 340 × 244 cm it is in good hands as a large living room rug. It also cuts a fine figure in the dining room, under a table for six to eight people. As a one-of-a-kind piece it brings individual character into the room and keeps its value far beyond short-lived trends.

Origin

In the eastern part of Persia lies the region of Khorasan (land of the rising sun), with Meschad (also Maschad, Meschhed or Meshad) as its capital. Originally the Timurid capital of Herat, which lies in today's Afghanistan, was also part of this region. The typical patterns of rugs from Meschad go back to the 19th and 20th centuries and are made up of small-scale elements that seem to repeat endlessly, sometimes arranged around medallions.

Material

The pile of this Meschad was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a number of impressive qualities: thanks to the wool's natural oil content, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and absorbs sound.
