RUG CLEANING AND WASHING

Rugs are everyday items, on which life leaves its mark. We clean your rugs gently with natural re-greasing soap. This way, we restore the natural fat content of rugs and kilims. As a result, your rugs stay clean longer after being washed and are more resistant to dirt and damp.

We achieve excellent results with our special stain treatment processes, even with antique rugs that have become very dirty over the years. Stubborn stains such as red wine, coffee or urine are almost always removed without leaving any residue, even from silk rugs.

CHEMICAL CLEANING OR GENTLE WASHING?

Chemical cleaning for under 10 € per square meter? No, gentle washing is the right care for a high-quality rug! When a rug is cleaned chemically, it is often handled by industrial machines or treated by a chemical process. Chemically cleaned rugs may look clean at first glance but may also be damaged. Above all, such cleaning processes remove the natural fat of wool and silk fibers.

To ensure that your high-quality rugs remain undamaged, we use a gentle, traditional method of washing exclusively. Instead of using chemical products that harm the environment and rugs’ materials, we use only water and natural soap, when washing your rugs. We carry out most of the process by hand. No matter whether your rug is made of silk, mohair, cotton, virgin wool or cork wool, we adapt the washing process to the material. This way, fibers will not be damaged, but cared for and protected.

A thorough re-greasing of natural materials is necessary, particularly if a rug has not been washed in many years or has been continuously exposed to hot air. Over time, wool and silk lose their valuable greasy top layer and dry out. This makes the pile of the rug dull and porous, leading to faster wear and tear. In extreme cases, the knots can become very brittle. Through washing with curd or gall soap, we give the pile of your rugs their natural fat content back.

HOW WE WASH YOUR RUGS:

We put a lot of care and effort into washing oriental rugs, because we know how important a thorough wash is, and how much damage bad cleaning can do. This is why we adapt the cleaning process to each individual rug, taking into account the origin, the year of manufacture, the material, and the colors of the rug.

1. Examination of the weave/pile
Before washing, we examine the rug to determine its origin, the fiber material (such as silk, wool, cotton, synthetic, etc.) and the type of dyes used to dye the wool. We carry out a very thorough and detailed examination to check if colors might run or be washed out, or if there are any signs of damage caused by strong sunlight, moths, strong chemicals, or stains caused by urine. All these factors determine how the rug should be washed and cleaned.

2. Dusting
As per tradition, we thoroughly beat each rug first to remove tiny (dust) particles. Foreign substances in the pile are abrasive and can lead to rapid wear. Then we vacuum the rug thoroughly on both sides again.

3. Hand-washing with curd soap and water
Afterwards, all rugs are washed on each side with mild, natural curd soap (gall soap). Subsequent thorough rinsing is important, as it washes out the curd soap residue and restores the richness of the rug's colors.

4. Drying
To ensure that precious materials are not damaged, careful hand washing is followed by a complex drying process. To prevent rugs from warping due to moisture, we carefully stretch them and leave them to dry thoroughly for several days. During this process, the rug is exposed to fresh warm air, so that neither mold nor rot bacteria can form on it. This process requires a lot of space, time, energy, and constant inspection.

5. Treatment with lanolin (on request)
As the final step, we can treat the surface of the rug with wool wax at your request. Wool wax (also known as lanolin or wool grease) is the secretion from the sebaceous glands of sheep. It is obtained through the washing of sheep's wool. Treatment with lanolin restores the shine and suppleness of the fibers of your rugs, thus increasing their lifespan.

PROFESSIONAL TREATMENT = VALUE RETENTION

Even if you have always carefully maintained and cleaned your oriental rug, weekly vacuuming does not replace washing. Therefore, you should consider a regular professional wash. We recommend high-quality rugs to be washed about every four years. This will protect your hand-knotted rugs from drying out, prevent the knots from becoming brittle, and the pile from wearing out quickly. It also helps the rug retain its bright colors. By handwashing your rug with curd soap, the value of your high-quality oriental rug is preserved.

STAIN REMOVAL

Stain removal on rugs is a science in and off of itself. First, it must be determined what stained the rug, because on the one hand there are stains such as wax and dirt stains that can be removed by a relatively uncomplicated cleaning process, and on the other hand there are various types of stains such as red wine, coffee, tea, urine, blood or stubborn juice stains, each of which must be treated in a specific way.

Thanks to our decades of experience, we have perfected our technique and can remove almost any stain completely.

PICK-UP AND DELIVERY

Large rugs are difficult to transport. In order to ensure that your hand-knotted rug does not lose its value, and that you can regularly benefit from our professional, gentle washing services in Dusseldorf, we offer a pick-up and delivery service in NRW (depending on your exact place of residence, free of charge or for an additional fee.)

Outside of NRW, we work together with a shipping company, which picks up the rug at your place for a fee and brings it back again after it has been washed. Just write to us to discuss the details.

And of course, we also handle the transport of your rug in case of necessary repairs or restoration.

WHEN DO I HAVE TO HAVE MY RUG CLEANED?

Your rug should be professionally washed and cleaned regularly about every four years. In urban environments, dirt and soot accumulates on rugs and textiles. Rugs can also dry out because of central or underfloor heating. During a professional wash, not only is the rug cleaned, but also moisturized, and the wool is re-greased.

HOW SHOULD I KNOW IF MY RUG NEEDS CLEANING?

Touching the rug is a simple and effective way to determine how dirty it is. Rub the palm of your hand on the rug against the direction of the nap. If your hand feels dirty or sticky, the rug must be cleaned.

A close visual inspection of the pile and substructure allows you to see, whether the dirt deposits are so thick that they are damaging the weft and warp threads. Carefully spread the wool apart to check for soiling of the substructure.

What's it like under the rug? Check the underlay and the floor underneath to see how clean the rug is. Dust and micro particles on the floor indicate that the rug needs to be washed.

Stains are the most obvious sign that a rug should be cleaned. Staining liquids sink into the fibers and tend to harden once dried, or when the stains are cleaned inappropriately; however, a quick and correct initial treatment of stains is always necessary.
