Origin

Needlepoint is an English word for embroidery that has become the established German term for rugs made using embroidery. There is a whole range of embroidery techniques.

The kelim stitch and its variant, the stem stitch, form patterns that look knitted. The kelim stitch pattern shows horizontal ribs; those of the stem stitch run vertically. Both patterns are built up from rows of diagonal stitches, with the stitches of every second row running in the opposite direction. With the stem stitch, back stitches are worked between the rows of kelim stitches. Both stitches suit large and small pattern areas alike.

Gobelin embroidery imitates tapestry weaving and takes its name from the Gobelin manufactory. Unlike the weaving technique, in which areas of colour are created by laying weft threads of different colours into the stretched warp, Gobelin embroidery covers the thread intersections of the ground fabric with diagonal stitches in coloured embroidery yarn. The character of the picture comes from the skilful way it is assembled stitch by stitch from just a few shades.

We speak of needle painting when the depictions show colour transitions reminiscent of painted pictures. In needle painting, satin stitches are worked so that they interlock, graded in fine shades of colour. The stitches are set closely together, following the shape of the pattern. Needle painting is often combined with stem stitches, split stitches and French knots.

This Needlepoint rug was embroidered in China. The pattern is inspired by the floral ornaments of the classic French Aubusson and Gobelin rugs.

Material

Needlepoint rugs are made by embroidering a special canvas backing with a woollen embroidery yarn. They consist only of the foundation weave (the warp threads) and the embroidery yarn. They therefore have no thick, upward-standing pile.
