Choosing a rug size & placing your rug
Size matters - at least when it comes to rugs.
Finding the perfect rug for your home is often not that easy. There is a lot to consider beyond its style. Above all, the right shape and size and where you place the rug can turn an ordinary room into a harmonious one and change its atmosphere in a very personal way.
The ideal placement of a rug depends on how your room and furniture are laid out. The right rug in the right spot gives your room structure and order, and it can also make the room feel more spacious and inviting.
The size of the rug must be in proportion to the rest of the room and large enough for the way you use it. Whether it's a living room, dining room, bedroom or study, every room has its own purpose, and the size of the rug has to suit it. Nothing is worse than wobbly dining chairs, or a living-room rug with no space for the dog during the Sunday-night crime drama.
Fortunately, there are a few basic design principles for size and placement that you can follow. To help you, we have put together the best rug placement options for every room.
We also offer a wide variety of designs and patterns, so your dream rug can shine in large and small living spaces alike. Many of our rugs can also be made to order, which makes it easy to find the perfect rug for you.
Which size goes where?
Standard sizes at a glance
First the four most popular sizes, then all the others, from small mats to salon rugs, plus the special shapes. The sizes are guidelines: under 240 × 170 cm, for example, you will find rugs from about 230 × 160 to 250 × 180 cm. The exact measured size of every rug is given in its title.
240 × 170 cm

Our tip
Our tip: Cover the area you want the rug to fill with newspapers. Or mark out your ideal dimensions with tape. That way you can test which size works best in your room.
Anything goes if you love it
When choosing rug dimensions, the size and purpose of the room matter most.
Here are rug layouts for the most important rooms to show you how it works.

The 2 Legs Option
240 x 170
In smaller living rooms, a smaller rug is usually the better choice, as it keeps the room from feeling crowded. We recommend placing only the front legs of the sofa on the rug. This way the arrangement feels light and airy rather than cramped. With this trick, a smaller living room instantly looks much larger.

No Feet No Problem
180 x 120
If the room is very small, try this option instead. Here, none of the seating stands on the rug. This makes the room look even more spacious. Make sure the rug is close enough to the sofa – but not under it. Also make sure your rug is always slightly wider than the sofa, so the whole arrangement looks balanced. If you have another chair or sofa, keep it the same distance from the rug as the rest of the seating.
The Circle of Life
Round
If you have plenty of space, you can also place a round rug in front of your sofa. It works best with a corner sofa. Round rugs create a sense of movement and bring even more life to your living room.
