Origin

The modern, light-toned rugs in our Zen collection are made from pure new wool. They are more than just a decorative element. They are a true masterpiece of the rug-knotting craft.

The finely knotted ridges create an enchanting pattern. The light, soft texture and the varying pile heights of the Zen collection calm the senses and create a pleasant atmosphere. Our Zen rugs are understated, meditative rugs with soul.

Pattern

The abstract, geometric composition is what gives this Zen its understated elegance. The pattern flatters the design of the room and never draws attention away from the furniture, the decor and the architectural elements. It settles beautifully into any setting and complements a room's furnishings in a subtle way.

The pile is a single colour throughout, in light grey. The plain design is understated, yet it can also set a wonderful decorative accent. The monochrome look of this rug fits beautifully into any setting.

The straight stripes of this Zen bring order and structure to the pattern.

The surface of this Zen has a mottled look. The shifts in tone and the light-and-dark shading of the pile yarn make the colours shimmer and keep the rug from showing dirt easily. These colour variations, known as abrash, give the rug a livelier appearance. The mottling comes about because the wool of this Zen was hand-spun. During dyeing, the natural dyes are absorbed to differing degrees.

Material

The technique used to make the materials for the pile of this Zen is over 200 years old. The wool was dyed with natural colours and spun by hand. Dyeing with natural or plant-based colours is more complicated, more expensive and more time-consuming than dyeing with chemical ones. For a luminous red, for example, you need around one kilo of ground madder root as dye per kilo of wool. For a strong yellow that isn't too pale, it even takes two kilograms of weld per kilo of wool. Spinning the wool is labour-intensive and time-consuming too. And fewer and fewer people still master spinning wool by hand.

But the effort is worth it: because it is dyed with natural dyes, the high-quality wool keeps its natural lanolin content. Dyed with natural colours and spun by hand, the wool creates fascinating, shifting patterns. The charm of hand-spun wool, with its slight irregularities and natural shades, comes into its own as a contrast in modern interiors, but just as much in rooms furnished in a more traditional or country-house style. The weft threads of this Zen are made of wool. The warp threads are made of cotton .
