Origin

This Abadeh runner was hand-knotted in the small town of Abadeh and the surrounding villages using the traditional Persian knot. Abadeh lies between the Iranian cities of Isfahan and Shiraz. Typical of Abadeh rugs is the striking brick-red colouring, which gives the rug a warm, welcoming presence.

Pattern

The decorated surround (border) of the rug forms a lovely contrast to the central pattern and creates a harmonious transition at the rug's edge.

Especially eye-catching are the diamonds in the pattern of this Abadeh. A diamond is a rhombus whose four sides, in Oriental rugs, are often serrated, stepped or set with hooks. This shape is one of the oldest basic motifs of the Orient and carries a symbolic meaning in the Islamic world: it stands for the immortality of the soul. That is why it is so often found as a filler motif in rugs.

The background of this Abadeh is kept in a soft cream white. Light red and cream white dominate the overall impression, while the border is worked in light red.

Condition

This Abadeh has a story behind it. The edges could do with a small repair in a few places. It was hand-knotted around 2000, and we have cleaned it thoroughly and lovingly restored it. Despite its age, the rug is in very good condition.

Material

The pile of this Abadeh was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep and is a natural, renewable raw material with many impressive qualities: thanks to the wool's natural grease content, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally resistant to dirt. Wool also provides excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and dampens sound. The weft and warp threads of this Abadeh are made of cotton, a versatile material that is tear-resistant and elastic and therefore ideal for a hard-wearing foundation.

A note on the photos

The colours of this rug change depending on which side you look at it from. It all depends on whether the light falls with the nap of the pile or against it. That is why we have photographed the rug from several angles.
