Afshari

There is only one rug like this one in light red and light blue: it brings together traditional craftsmanship and timeless elegance. With a knot density of approx. 120,000 knots per m², the painstaking workmanship shows above all in the precise drawing of the pattern and the finely worked details. At 120 × 84 cm it suits a place as a bedside rug. It shows to just as much advantage in the bedroom or hallway. Colours and texture give the room a welcoming atmosphere – with a character no other rug shares.

Origin

The Afshar (also spelled Afschar) were an important Oghuz tribe. The "i" in the name Afshari corresponds to our preposition "of". Afshari therefore means rug of the Afshar. Originally the Persian Afshar lived in the north-west of Iran, on the Afghan border. Part of the tribe was forcibly resettled in the south-east of Iran, near the city of Kerman on the Silk Road. Here knotting rugs became an important source of income for the Afshar. Ever since the resettlement, the Afshar have also been known for their distinctive hand-knotted Afshar rugs. Afshar rugs are sometimes traded as Sirdjan rugs as well. The rugs come in red and blue tones and mostly geometric patterns. The most widespread pattern has a field in the middle holding one or several square rosettes. It is thought that this central field depicts a stretched animal hide.

Material

The pile of this Afshari was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a range of impressive properties: thanks to the natural lanolin in the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and dampens sound.

The weft threads of this Afshari are made of cotton. Goat wool was used for the warp threads.

Condition

You are not the first to take a liking to this Afshari. It had owners before you who valued and used it. It was knotted around 1965. It has been thoroughly cleaned and is in good but unrestored condition. The pile is worn in places. The edges are heavily worn in some spots. The fringes could do with a repair. We have not restored this Afshari because we feel it has a special presence just as it is. If you would like us to, we will of course be happy to restore the rug for you. Either way, this Afshari will give you pleasure for decades to come.

A note on the photos

The colours of this rug change depending on which side you look at it from. It all depends on whether the light falls with the nap of the pile or against it. That is why we have photographed the rug from several angles.
