Origin

The Afshar (also spelled Afschar) were an important Oghuz tribe. The "i" in the name Afshari corresponds to our preposition "of". Afshari therefore means rug of the Afshar. Originally the Persian Afshar lived in the north-west of Iran, on the Afghan border. Part of the tribe was forcibly resettled in the south-east of Iran, near the city of Kerman on the Silk Road. Here knotting rugs became an important source of income for the Afshar. Ever since the resettlement, the Afshar have also been known for their distinctive hand-knotted Afshar rugs. Afshar rugs are sometimes traded as Sirdjan rugs as well. The rugs come in red and blue tones and mostly geometric patterns. The most widespread pattern has a field in the middle holding one or several square rosettes. It is thought that this central field depicts a stretched animal hide.

This Old Afshari is around 86 years old and a true collector's piece.

Material

The pile of this Old Afshari was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a number of impressive properties: thanks to the natural lanolin content of the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also provides excellent thermal insulation, has a regulating effect on the indoor climate and dampens sound.

The weft and warp threads of this Old Afshari are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, which makes it particularly well suited to a hard-wearing foundation weave.

Condition

You are not the first to take a liking to this Old Afshari. It had owners before you who valued it and lived with it. It was knotted around 86. It has been thoroughly cleaned and is in good but unrestored condition. The pile has become a little thinner over the years. The edges and fringes of the rug are damaged in places and could do with a repair. We have not restored this Old Afshari, because we feel it has a special charm just as it is. If that is what you would like, we will of course gladly restore the rug for you. Either way, this Old Afshari will give you pleasure for decades to come.
