This rug in rust red and dark blue brings together traditional craftsmanship and timeless elegance. A knot density of approx. 200,000 knots per m² makes the elaborate workmanship visible – right down to the fine execution of the details. At 213 × 146 cm, it is well placed as a living room rug. Origin

The Bakhtiari (also Bachtiari) are an ancient, widely branching people living in south-western Iran. The collective name for their rugs is Bakhtiar or Bakhtiari, where the ‘i’ corresponds to our preposition ‘of’. Bakhtiari rugs – the rugs of the Bakhtiari – take in numerous sub-provenances with a range of pattern types. For all this breadth, Bakhtiar rugs resemble one another in their colour compositions, in their various handcrafted techniques and in their line, which is always floral.

Bakhtiari rugs are made mainly with natural dyes, which feel pleasant despite their intensity and take on a beautiful patina over the years. Frequently used colours are brown for the outlines, plus red, bottle green, yellow and white as a highlight that gives the rug its likeable character.

This Old Bakhtiari is around 86 years old and a real collector's piece.

Material

The pile of this Old Bakhtiari was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a range of impressive properties: thanks to the natural lanolin in the wool, the surface repels droplets of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and dampens sound.

The weft and warp threads of this Old Bakhtiari are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, which makes it particularly well suited to a hard-wearing foundation.

Condition

This Old Bakhtiari has a story to tell. The rug has a few smaller stains. It was knotted around 1940. We have cleaned it thoroughly and restored it with care. Despite its age, it is therefore in very good condition.

A note on the photos

The colours of this rug change depending on which side you look at it from. It all depends on whether the light falls with the nap of the pile or against it. That is why we have photographed the rug from several angles.
