Old Belutsch

Craftsmanship and timeless elegance meet in this dark red rug. Its knot density of roughly 240,000 knots per m² makes the painstaking workmanship visible – right down to the finely worked details. At 202 × 120 cm it is well placed as a rug for the bedroom or study. It shows just as well in a smaller living room. Colour and texture lend any room a homely, exclusive note – a one-of-a-kind piece that will last for years.

Origin

Belutsch is a rug provenance in the region between Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan. Belutsch rugs (also Belutsch, Beloutch, Beluch, Baluch, Belutch, Balouch, Baloutche or Balúchi) are made by semi-nomads and nomads. Originally, Belutsch rugs were knotted exclusively by the Baluch nomads. Today, however, a number of other tribes knot Belutsch rugs as well. The patterns tend to be geometric and the palette is kept in shades of red and brown. Mostly small rugs and mats are produced, as these are also used by the nomads themselves and are easier to transport.

This old Belutsch is around 76 years old and a real collector's piece.

Material

The pile of this Old Belutsch was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a range of impressive qualities: thanks to the natural lanolin in the wool, the surface repels drops of water and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and dampens sound.

The foundation (weft and warp threads) of this Old Belutsch is made of new wool.

Condition

This Old Belutsch has had admirers before you. It was knotted around 1950. It has been thoroughly cleaned and is in good but unrestored condition. The pile is worn in places. Parts of the border are missing along one side. We have not restored this Old Belutsch, because we feel it has a special presence just as it is. If you would prefer otherwise, we will of course gladly restore the rug for you. Either way, this Old Belutsch will give you pleasure for decades to come.

A note on the photos

The colours of this rug change depending on which side you look at it from. It all depends on whether the light falls with the nap of the pile or against it. That is why we have photographed the rug from several angles.
