Place of origin

This rug has been knotted in Bidjar, in the province of Kermanshah in the northwest of Iran. Bijar rugs are among the most solid and the highest quality oriental rugs. The majority of the population in Bijar are Kurds.

The Kurdish Bijars use a particularly thick weft yarn, which is extremely hard. The result is a plank-hard, extremely durable rug. Younger Bidjars in particular are decorated with the typical Herati pattern, which is also called the fish pattern. This old Bijar is more than 40 years old and a true collector's item.

Patterns

The abstract, geometric composition creates the simple elegance of this Bijar. The pattern flatters the design of the room and does not take the attention away from its furniture, decoration and architectural elements. It blends in fantastically with any surroundings and subtly complements the interior design of a room..

The embellished edging (border) forms a beautiful contrast to the center and creates a transition at the edge of the rug.

The repeating elements in the center field of this Bijar rug have no specific center (so-called repeating pattern). The repeating pattern has a calming but not boring effect. Rugs with repeating patterns are also called patterned.

The background of this Bijar is dark blue. The border features light red, blue gray and dark blue.

Condition

You are not the first to appreciate this Bijar. It has had owners before you who have cherished and used it. It was hand knotted about 1940. It has been thoroughly cleaned and only partially restored condition but is in good condition. We have not completely restored this Bijar because we think it is as it is a special charm. If you would like, we will of course restore the rug further for you. We can restore almost any rug to an almost perfect condition.

Material

The pile of this Bijar has been hand-knotted from high-quality virgin wool. Virgin wool is obtained through the gentle shearing of sheep. Virgin wool is a sustainable, natural raw material with a number of impressive properties; due to the wool's natural fat content, the surface repels water droplets and is thus naturally impervious to dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, has a regulating effect on living climate and muffles sound. The weft and warp threads of this Bijar are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and stretchable and, therefore, ideal for a durable backing fabric.
