Old Buchara

This rug in light red and dark red brings together traditional craftsmanship and timeless elegance. With a knot density of around 560,000 knots per m², the elaborate workmanship shows above all in the precise drawing of the design and the fine execution of the details. At 189 × 64 cm it is well suited as a hallway runner. It comes into its own just as well beside the bed. Origin

Buchara (sometimes also written Bochara) is an oasis city in Uzbekistan on the former Silk Road. Although hardly any rugs were ever knotted in Buchara itself, the city gave its name to many Oriental rugs, because they were exported to the West from there. The rugs themselves were knotted by various Turkmen tribes, above all in the Caucasus, Persia and Afghanistan.

Buchara rugs are among the finest and best-loved rugs of Central Asia. That is also why the pattern has been copied in many countries, especially in Pakistan. These copies are sold as so-called Pakistan-Buchara.

This Old Buchara is around 46 years old and a real collector's piece.

Material

The pile of this Old Buchara was hand-knotted from high-quality new wool. New wool is obtained by gently shearing sheep. New wool is a renewable, natural raw material with a number of impressive properties: thanks to the natural grease content of the wool, the surface repels water droplets and is therefore naturally protected against dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, helps regulate the indoor climate and dampens sound.

The weft and warp threads of this Old Buchara are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and elastic, which makes it particularly well suited to a hard-wearing foundation.

Condition

This Old Buchara has a history. It was knotted around 1980. We have cleaned it thoroughly and lovingly restored it. It is therefore – despite its age – in very good condition.

A note on the photos

The colours of this rug change depending on which side you look at it from. It all depends on whether the light falls with the nap of the pile or against it. That is why we have photographed the rug from several angles.
