Origin
Qom is a relatively young provenance for Persian rugs. The city of Qom (also Ghom, Gom, Ghoum, Goum) lies in central Iran, about 100 km south of the capital Tehran. As there was no old knotting tradition in Qom to build on, patterns were and still are adopted from other weaving regions. Over time, however, a style of its own has grown out of this. The silk rugs from Qom are today among the most famous and finest rugs in the world. The field of rugs from Qom often has a light ground decorated with finely drawn medallion patterns or all-over boteh or vase designs. This Old Qom in pure silk is around 86 years old and a true collector's piece.
Material
The silk of the pile of this Old Qom in pure silk makes the colours of the pattern glow in ever-changing shades, depending on how the light falls. It turns this Old Qom in pure silk into a real jewel and creates an atmosphere in the room that is both welcoming and extremely elegant and refined. Silk is obtained by hand from the cocoons of the silk moth. Because the individual silk filaments are exceptionally long, very fine yarns can be spun from them that are light in weight yet still tear-resistant. This fine yarn allows smaller knots to be tied and therefore finer patterns to be created. That is why the finest rugs in the world are hand-knotted from pure silk. With this Old Qom in pure silk, even the foundation was made from pure silk. The thin yet hard-wearing material of the weft and warp threads allows a particularly fine knotting and therefore a particularly fine pattern.
Condition
You are not the first to take a liking to this Old Qom in pure silk. It has had owners before you who valued it and lived with it. It was knotted around 86. It has been thoroughly cleaned and is in good but unrestored condition. The pile has grown a little thinner over the years and has changed colour. The edges of the rug are damaged in places and the fringes have taken quite a beating and could do with a repair. We have not restored this Old Qom in pure silk, because we feel it has a special charm just as it is. If that is what you would like, we will of course gladly restore the rug for you. Either way, this Old Qom in pure silk will bring you pleasure for decades to come.
A note on the photos
Child labour? No thanks.
Child labour? No thanks. Children belong in school, not at a knotting frame or a loom. For us it therefore goes without saying that we only offer rugs made under fair conditions and without child labour.
We attach particular importance to humane working conditions and tolerate no child labour at any of our producers. Thank you for helping us to ensure fair conditions.
That is why we support the initiative Care & Fair against child labour in the rug trade.
