Origin

Qom is a relatively young provenance for Persian rugs. The city of Qom (also Ghom, Gom, Ghoum, Goum) lies in central Iran, about 100 km south of the capital Tehran. As there was no old knotting tradition in Qom to build on, patterns were and still are adopted from other weaving regions. Over time, however, a style of its own has grown out of this. The silk rugs from Qom are today among the most famous and finest rugs in the world. The field of rugs from Qom often has a light ground decorated with finely drawn medallion patterns or all-over boteh or vase designs.

This Old Qom in pure silk is around 96 years old and a true collector's piece.

Material

The silk pile of this Old Qom in pure silk makes the colours of the pattern shine in ever-changing facets, depending on how the light falls. It turns this Old Qom in pure silk into a real highlight and gives the room an atmosphere that is cosy and at the same time very elegant and refined. Silk is harvested by hand from the cocoons of the silkworm. Because the individual silk filaments are extremely long, very fine yarns can be spun that are light in weight yet still strong. Finer yarn allows smaller knots to be tied and therefore more intricate patterns to be worked. That is why the finest rugs in the world are hand-knotted in pure silk.

With this Old Qom in pure silk, even the foundation was made from pure silk. The thin yet hard-wearing material of the weft and warp threads allows a particularly fine knotting and therefore a particularly fine pattern.

Condition

You are not the first to take a liking to this Old Qom in pure silk. It had owners before you who valued and used it. It was knotted around 1930. It has been thoroughly cleaned and is in good but unrestored condition. The rug has a few small stains. We have not restored this Old Qom in pure silk, because we feel it has a special presence just as it is. If you would prefer otherwise, we will of course gladly restore the rug for you. Either way, this Old Qom in pure silk will give you pleasure for decades to come.

A note on the photos

The colours of this rug change depending on which side you look at it from. It all depends on whether the light falls with the nap of the pile or against it. That is why we have photographed the rug from several angles.
